Dr Arata Kuno
Dr Arata Kuno is a Professor of International Economics at the Faculty of International Relations, Asia University in Tokyo, Japan. He also holds a position as a visiting researcher at the Institute for International Trade and Investment (ITI). In the early 2000s, he contributed to Japan’s FTA negotiations as a visiting researcher at the Trade Policy Bureau, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI). He also served as a senior economist at Mitsubishi UFJ Research and Consulting Co. Ltd., a private think-tank, until 2010.
While his earlier research focused on Japan’s trade policy and East Asian economic integration, his recent interests have expanded to include the relationship between globalization and economic security issues. Some of his recent publications include: ‘Building Resilient Supply Chains through IPEF: The Possibilities and Challenges’ (The Japan Institute of International Affairs, 2022), ‘The Effectiveness of Economic Sanctions against Russia: Preliminary Evaluation and Prospects (in Japanese)’ (Toua (East Asia), 2022), ‘Japan’s joining MPIA an outside chance to boost momentum for WTO reform’ (East Asia Forum, 2023), and ‘China’s Economic Coercion: Trends and Implications from Case Studies (in Japanese)’ (A forthcoming book chapter). In 2022, he authored a series of ten articles on the theme of ‘Globalization and Economic Security’ in the Nikkei newspaper.
Recently, he has been delivering lectures on economic security at various institutions in Japan, including the ruling party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), and the Ministry of Finance. He has also been invited as a speaker and panelist to international conferences on economic security, such as the “Korea-Japan Economic Security Dialogue” and the “IPEF Supply Chain Seminar”.
He received his Ph.D. in Economics from Keio University.
